There is a claim that still sounds radical in many learning and technology circles, but is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid:
Learning itself has changed.
For the first time in human history, learning is no longer a singular activity contained inside individual human minds. It is now a shared, distributed activity between humans and intelligent machines—and increasingly, among machines themselves.
This is not a pedagogical shift. It is a once-in-a-species change.
As we move rapidly toward AGI, we are crossing a threshold where intelligence no longer requires human participation to learn, iterate, or improve. That transition is already underway. The question is no longer if agentic systems will learn autonomously, but what kind of knowledge they will learn from—and whether that knowledge deserves their trust.

This moment can be understood through a simple progression.
Species Intelligence Has Become Distributed
Human intelligence no longer operates alone.
Memory is externalized. Pattern recognition is shared.
Reasoning is collaborative. Sensemaking unfolds across humans, models, tools, and agents.
Intelligence now exists between humans and machines.
This is a phylogenetic shift—an evolutionary change in how intelligence functions at the species level.
The Ontology of Learning Changes With It
As intelligence changes, learning changes in kind.
Learning is no longer:
- Singular
- Internal
- Fully human
- Optimized for memorization
It is now:
- Shared
- Distributed
- Relational
- Optimized for judgment, framing, and discernment
Learning no longer precedes action. It unfolds with action, through collaboration with intelligent systems.
Ontology recapitulates phylogeny. As intelligence evolves at the species level, learning evolves at the level of being.
Memorization Is No Longer the Scarce Skill
For most of modern history, learning was optimized for recall because access to information was limited. Storing knowledge in people made sense.
That constraint no longer exists.
What is scarce now is not memory, but:
- Judgment
- Contextual understanding
- The ability to ask good questions
- The ability to evaluate whether an answer should be trusted
- The ability to collaborate with AI without deferring to it
Yet much of our learning infrastructure still behaves as if recall were the goal.
This is not merely inefficient. It is structurally misaligned with how intelligence now operates.
Agentic AI and the Knowledge Substrate
Agentic AI systems—the ones that plan, act, adapt, and increasingly learn autonomously—are built on content:
- Courses
- Knowledge bases
- Tags and taxonomies
- Learning objects
- Performance documentation
Increasingly, that content is machine-generated, lightly supervised, and recursively reused. It is summarized, recombined, and fed back into other systems—including systems that will soon refine their own knowledge without human intervention.
At first, this looks like efficiency.
In reality, it introduces fragility.

A House of Cards
Agentic systems do not merely use content. They trust it.
When the knowledge that underwrites their decisions becomes perfunctory—technically present but semantically thin—the entire structure becomes unstable.
This is the house of cards.
- The system appears coherent
- It scales rapidly
- It sounds confident
- And then, under real-world complexity, accuracy collapses
Not because errors spike dramatically, but because meaning erodes quietly.
The knowledge becomes:
- Current, but not correct
- Fluent, but not grounded
- Plausible, but not worthy of trust
When AGI begins teaching itself atop this substrate, drift is no longer a risk—it is a certainty.
Instructional Design as Fort Knox
Historically, Instructional Design functioned like Fort Knox.
It guaranteed the standard:
- Intentional objectives
- Coherent structure
- Alignment between learning and performance
- Human judgment about what mattered and why
That “gold” backed the system.
But those roles are being automated away, underfunded, or eliminated—just as learning systems become foundational to agentic intelligence.
LLMs do not distinguish between truth and plausibility. They distinguish between probability and recency.
If the gold is gone, what exactly is backing the system now?
This Is Not Hallucination—It’s Drift
This failure mode is not hallucination.
It is epistemic drift: knowledge slowly detaching from grounding as it is recursively generated, summarized, and reused—now increasingly by systems that do not require human correction.
The danger is not that the system is obviously wrong.
It is that it becomes confidently shallow.
In high-stakes environments, shallow correctness is often worse than visible error.
The Speed Mismatch That Accelerates Collapse
This fragility is intensified by a temporal mismatch.
Human learning unfolds over time. Understanding requires pauses—reflection, doubt, revision, integration. Agentic AI operates at near-zero time.
When one cognitive system moves orders of magnitude faster than the other:
- Reflection is skipped
- Judgment is deferred
- Learning collapses into surface-level validation
Humans do not learn faster. They defer sooner.
Speed does not merely amplify weak foundations. It prevents us from noticing that those foundations are weak at all.
Learning After AGI: Stewardship, Not Control
Learning is not obsolete.
But unexamined learning is.
As AGI becomes inevitable—and increasingly self-teaching—humans will no longer be the primary site of learning. That loss is real, and it is already underway.
What remains is responsibility.
The future of learning is:
- Curating high-integrity knowledge
Ensuring that what feeds human–AI systems is grounded, coherent, and worthy of trust. - Reconciling human and machine time scales
Designing learning and decision systems that preserve human judgment in the face of machine-speed generation and action. - Teaching people how to collaborate responsibly with AI
Not as passive consumers of outputs, but as active partners who frame, interrogate, and contextualize machine intelligence. - Acting as stewards of epistemic quality in an automated ecosystem
Taking responsibility for standards, rigor, and meaning when content is increasingly machine-generated.
In a world where machines increasingly generate the content—and increasingly learn from themselves—humans must guarantee the standard.
Without that stewardship, agentic AI does not fail because it lacks intelligence.
It fails because it is built on a house of cards.
